What is it? Otoplasty is a surgical procedure used to correct a congenital
(or sometimes acquired) protrusion of the ears. The procedure typically
involves a posterior incision performed under general anesthesia.
Folds that are absent in the ear are recreated, the protrusion eliminated
and the ears realigned with the sides of the patient's head.
What does it help & not help?
Usually helps with:
ear repositioning
Will not help with:
ear size reduction
How long will it last? Otoplasty tends to be permanent if the operation is performed
before the patient reaches puberty. In adults, there is a 15% chance
of recurrence.
Surgical Considerations Surgery is performed in an accredited outpatient surgery center
or hospital. The patient must maintain bandaging for one week following
surgery.
